Cost of Living in Spain

There is very little information available on the web regarding the cost of living in Spain. We provide a brief section here but see also other links on the previous page.

Cost of Living Index
Using the Cost of Living Index calculation (as described on the Expat Access website) the following relative Cost of Living values can be obtained:

    Barcelona compared with:
    • London - 18% less
    • Oxfordshire - 6% less
    • Belfast - 1% less
    Madrid compared with:
    • London - 13% less
    • Oxfordshire - about the same
    • Belfast - 4% more
General
It is important to remember that in Spain general living costs are much lower than here in the UK. For example fresh fruit and vegetables are a fraction of the UK price. Meat and poultry are similar in price, but the meat is normally trimmed for you and then weighed, therefore it is actually cheaper per pound.

Eating out is extremely well priced and it is possible to have a "menu of the day" for as little as £4.00 for which you will get three courses including a bottle of wine and bread. It is often cheaper to eat out than it is to stay in!

Car prices - both new and second hand - tend to be quite high, but by the same token cars tend to hold their value better than in the UK (see section on Buying a Car).
